I John 5:14

" And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:"

Over the past few years we have seen the housing and financial markets struggle and ultimately fail, requiring a bail out from the federal government. These events coupled with other issues have caused many to lose confidence in the American economy as well as its leaders. The President and Congress have historically low job approval ratings. This is due primarily to the fact that American's feel like they are not being heard. MySpace, Twitter, & Facebook along with other social media have taught us one important concept. People enjoy being heard.

Have you ever thought, "If I could speak to Congress or the President, I would say.....?" How would you feel if you were sent a personal invitation to address America's leaders that was also broadcast live to the entire nation? A reasonable person would know their address should be open, honest, and most importantly, respectful. These are dignitaries of one of the most powerful nations in the world after all.

That is what God is promising you here. He has issued you an "open mic" should you decide to use it in a way that grants Him the honor He is due. Praying, or asking, according to His will is an act of honor whereby you share your heart in a manner that respects His authority. He is God, the Creator of the universe after all. His will is not some mystical and nebulous theology but it is what He has already shown you through His Word and Spirit. Pray in light of what you already know about God and you can have confidence He hears what your are saying.

Eventful Week

All I can say is Praise The Lord anyhow! It has been a very crazy week and a half. I own 3 vehicles and not a single one is in working condition. Normally I would be frustrated that my wife was stranded 45 mins away from me, and me without wheels. I can honestly say I have the peace of God and have complete confidence He will supply our needs. That being said, I will have to make a new devotional posting Wed instead of tonight. May the Lord grant you the same peace He has shed so graciously upon me today.

Jude 22

"And of some have compassion, making a difference."

I really appreciate this promise and have used it many times to comfort myself. Deep within all humans is a desire to live a life that matters. Whether young or old, all will examine their own life and ask, "Did/Does my life matter?" The answer to that can sometimes be scary for many. Here in this verse God has promised how we can live in a manner where the answer will be a resounding YES!

This promise hinges on one profound condition; compassion. He is speaking about our actions to others, so there can be no scapegoating on how they react. This spiritual law is as constant as the laws of nature. Just as sure as an object at rest tends to stay at rest, so to will compassion yield a result. While you may not see the results, acting with compassion will always make a difference in people's lives.

Think for a moment about Mother Thereasa. I may not totally agree with her doctrine, but there is no mistaking her compassion for people. The result of that compassion has made a differerence in many lives, most of which were not the direct recipients of her compassion. God doesn't need a world stage, your community will work just fine. He doesn't need a gifted person, just a willing vessel. God doesn't need a multitude, just you.  Despite what the devil will say, compassion always yields a result that makes a difference because God said it would. Are you willing to demonstrate compassion on others, so that God can honor His promise and make a difference in their lives?

James 4:7

"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

Do you remember that annoying kid in elementary school? The one who always had soemthing to say. The one who always bothered you. Sometimes that kid was also a bully. Did you ever do anything about it or where you the kid who was a tattle-tale? Maybe you were the kid who tried to hide, even going out of your way to avoid an encounter. If you were the kid who silently endured, may I appologize on behalf of all the bullies?

On a serious note. The devil is a bully and he will always have something to say to you. Often there will be no place to hide from him. Trying to silently endure, hoping he will quit, will only yield a life of frustration and sadness. God has something else in mind for you and it reminds me of a vivid childhood memory. After my parents divorce I was forced to attend a new school that was vastly different and much larger than what I was used to. My first day a kid, three years my elder, kept thumping my ears and kicking my feet trying to trip me. As soon as I got off the school grounds I dropped my bag and squared up and said, "Let's get this over with."

While I don't advocate this kind of violence to people, it sure needs to be employed for the devil. After my fight at the new school that kid left me alone. That is exactly what God has promised us. If we will "square up" against the devil, by God's strength he will flee away. If you find the devil keeps thumping you maybe its time to consider if you have really resisted. God said there is a victory waiting for you.

John 14:18

“I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.”

Jesus spoke this promise to His disciples. It is implied to all who will receive his comfort. This reminds me of the nature of humans, which is to be curious. Let’s face it. You have gone by an accident scene and starred. It is as if we can’t help ourselves. Have you ever noticed how many dozens of people quickly fill the role of curious onlooker, yet very few do anything to really comfort. Jesus promises not to be a curious onlooker who passes by, more concerned about His own agenda. He will come directly to you, not to your general vicinity.

As a child I was playing in a pool unattended. Long story short I cracked my head open on the edge of the concrete. I ran inside the house screaming wildly with blood gushing out of my skull. My cousins looked on with amazement while my mom quickly rushed to my side. Instead of berating me for all that I had done wrong, she simply began to comfort me. It began with her loving embrace followed by the pain of cleaning my wound, and ended with her keeping me awake to avoid further complications. Like a compassionate mother, Jesus is quickly drawn to your side with the sole intention of easing your discomfort. His primary motivation is to assist you, regardless of what you have done.

It is easy to be consumed with guilt over what you did wrong but dwelling on that prolongs the comfort He offers. By the same token, dwelling on what others have done to you will cause you to never experience His comfort. Will you allow Him to fix the situation? Let Him do what He wishes. Even though it may hurt, it is always best for you.

I Corinthians 10:13 #3

I Corinthians 10:13 “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

When you read this promise can you see who is really in control? He will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able. God is affirming His control of the situation while also promising you will be competent to deal with it. Admittedly, there have been times I have looked at a situation in my life and ask, “God I appreciate the vote of confidence, but is it possible you think too highly of me?”

As a kid I watched a show called Macgyver. Every episode he found himself in serious trouble, even life threatening. Every time he used past experiences and knowledge to escape the situation. This is what God is promising you. The temptations you face are escapable but not necessarily avoidable. Like Macgyver, God has given you knowledge in His word and provides you with many experiences all of which are designed to show you the way of escape.

He has promised you will be able to bear it. It may require you to stop whining about your situation or complaining about others. It definitely will require you to seek to know where God is in the situation. Once you seek Him you are on your way to realizing the fullness of this promise.

I Corinthians 10:13 #2

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”

But (Behold the Underlying Truth) God is faithful. The apostle, inspired by the Spirit, wrote this promise. This statement came from a man who nearly lost his life, for the sake of the gospel, a dozen times. When you consider the life experiences of Paul, you then begin to understand the fullness of those three words; God is faithful.

In a post-modern society faithfulness appears as an obscure concept. We are constantly let down by people seeking their own interests and agendas. When God promises to be faithful, He is saying, “I am seeking your best interest, not mine own.” The best examples are in nature. When considering how faithful God is, we have to look at things like Ol’ Faithful at Yellowstone or the vast celestial bodies that always do what they were designed to do. I’m thinking on the magnitude of the sun. Has there ever been a day the sun didn’t shine in the world, even if it were just above the clouds?

Don’t forget that this promise was made in the middle of a discussion about temptations. When you feel overwhelmed, you can rest assured that God is not only present, but that He has a way. Always. Why? He is Faithful. If He were a student, God would always show up on time, with paper, pencil, and book, and His homework would always be done. Couple this with the fact that your temptation is “common” and you know God can be counted on to get you through, regardless of what you face!

I Corinthians 10:13 #1

“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”

You are unique. You have a distinct personality. God loves you as an individual. While this is all true, you are also similar to the rest of humanity. You battle the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, just like everyone else. God has promised that what you face is common to all of humanity.

Contrary to the comic strip, there are no “born losers” in this world. I have friends who are millionaires, middles class, and poverty stricken. I also know they have similar types of problems that revolve around their humanity. This is promised of God. There will not be a “special” hill for you to climb because you were born with certain attributes or circumstances. Basically, God is telling you that all of humanity is in this together.

John 2:19

John 2:19 “Jesus answered and said unto them, ‘Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.’”

Many people have heard of prophets. Jesus was more than a prophet. He had power. Here He simply said, “You can try to kill me, but at a time I choose I will revive again.” What is awesome about this promise is the fact that He did it. Jesus was not Houdini and this was more than an optical allusion. There were no trap doors, fake beatings, mock crosses, or blood capsules. He really allowed them to do their worst and then He came forth alive!

Do you see the hidden message in this promise; that applies to all His promises? God can do anything! He also demonstrated that He always keeps His promises. Jesus, as a man, was living the example He wants you to follow. Claim the promise, live according to what God has said, and it shall come to pass.

There will be times when you are tempted to doubt God’s promises. The devil and his minions will tell you it is out dated, unnecessary, or even impossible. The next time this happens, remind them of Jesus’ resurrection. Jesus took the most frightening concept known to man, faced it head on, and thereby perpetually proved that God’s power is not limited. “Death is swallowed up in victory.”

Proverbs 15:1

"A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger."

I have to admit I have proven both of these promises true over and over. I have been in situations where I get caught up in the moment and say something that is the equivalent to pouring gas on a fire. In my early days as a Christian, I was zealous and rather foolish. Several times I would slap people around with scripture only to find the got angry. I thought they were ashamed of God's word, until the Lord "slapped" me by showing me what I was really doing. Good words, even great words, can be spoken in a manner that is grievous. Lord help us to guard our own mouth.
It never ceases to amaze me how easy it is to deescalate a situation by simply saying I'm sorry. Just the other day I almost ran a truck off the road because he was in my blindspot. He was driving way too fast and crossing solid lines to get in another lane to pass me, and he even honked like an angry man. I was tempted to honk back, as if to express that I was in the right and he should be more cautious when driving. Technically speaking and by the world's reasoning I could stand my ground, but instead I simply moved back into my lane, gave a sheepish smile, along with a friendly wave as if to say "My bad." Immediately, his demeanor softened and he waved back as if to say, "That's ok."
We could go into the psychology of how and why it works, but who cares. The promise to you and I is that it will work. God is granting us an awesome power! We have the ability to "positively" manipulate others. Not for our own pleasure, but for His glory. When we humble ourselves, leaving God to play the role of our defense, then other people are encouraged to act more Godly. Other people's bad thoughts and evil intentions toward you are annihilated by this promise. Do you trust God enough to answer softly, even when you are right?

Luke 15:31 #3

And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.”

The last promise in this verse deals with our innermost fear of being alone. There are times when we all need a little personal down time, but it is rare that a person truly desires to be completely alone. Only the most damaged, who have lost all hope of a fruitful relationship, desire to live in isolation. That is why He promised that we too, can ever be with Him.

I remember the one time I was taken to daycare. I was five and my mom dropped me off because she had some things to do and it wouldn’t work out for me to go with her. I pleaded for her not to, but she left anyway. Needless to say I had a lousy day. I didn’t like all the strange people, their strict rules, and especially being forced to nap when I wasn’t tired. The first recess after nap-time, I climbed the chain-link fence and walked to a nearby gas station where I made a collect call to my mom. Like I said, it was the one time I was put in daycare.

Being around strangers doesn’t satisfy. It is possible to be lonely in a crowded room of strangers. As humans we will go to great lengths to be around those we know; possibly endangering ourselves along the way. As you make this journey through life God has promised you the comfort of His presence. Just because you can’t feel it doesn’t mean He isn’t with you. The next time you start to feel alone remember that God has promised that He will not drop you off at the daycare.

Luke 15:31 #2

“And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.”

In high school I had a particular friend Tony. He was an all right guy most of the time, but once in a while I wanted to beat him up. One day he, my buddy Eric and I were playing basketball at the park when Tony says, “I feel sorry for you guys because you are both poor and I am rich.” If ever I wanted to flatten his nose surely it was then.

Instead, I would invite myself over to his house and eat as much of his food as possible. This also proved to be a challenge because he was the kind of guy who would only share what he really didn’t want all for himself. If his mom bought certain cookies, he would eat them secretly and offer me some other type. This behavior resulted in a superficial friendship that did not last over the years.

God is not a stingy, immature, kid who rubs your face in your own inadequacy. Contrariwise, He freely offers to you all that He has, just as He did the son who remained by his side. God is not interested in keeping His very best for himself while offering you some stripped down salvation. He proved this by giving His only son, Jesus. Could there be any greater evidence that God truly offers you all that He has? Like any gift that is offered it is up to you to receive. Are you willing to enjoy His benefits?

Hebrews 12:1

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.”

Some promises are buried a little below the surface and that is exactly what we see in this verse. We know this is a promise because God never commands what we are not able to perform. The nugget we are going to mine out today has to do with the fact that we can let go.

During childhood I heard too many jokes, most of them being vulgar or racially motivated. One particular race was often the punch line of jokes indicating their lack of “intelligence.” This verse reminds me of the joke about the 3 people who were traveling across a hot desert. Each brought an item to help along their journey. The first two brought water and food, while the “dumb” one brought a car door; in case he got hot he would roll down the window.

The reality is we can be that foolish. There are times when we cling to emotional, physical, and mental baggage that serve no purpose to help on our journey. We “think” it will help, but really it is a hindrance. I am talking about the things in your life that make it difficult for you to truly be happy or at peace, yet they are things which you have no clear conviction from God to carry them around. God is telling you, “Let it go.”

God intends for His children to soar above the problems of this world that would weigh them down. Instead of flopping around like a wild bird that caught a plastic bag on its leg, which is wrapped around stick that has picked up a bunch of long wet grass, try stopping long enough to let Him close enough to set you free. You might make some progress bound but it is a lot easier if you are not carry around unnecessary weight. Do you ever feel spiritually worn out and don’t know why? Ask God and He will show you what you can drop.

Luke 15:31

"And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine."

This particular promise has 3 aspects to it. I want to begin with the least obvious first. Do you remember growing up and the nickname(s) you were given? I am not talking about the cruel ones slapped on you by kids at school, not even the funny ones given by cousins. I am talking about the one given by those who truly loved you. It was a name of endearment. Things like princess, bobo, bubba, and sissy. Everyone in the family knew who was assigned to that name, hence it was indicative of their status.

Did you know that God has a nickname for you? In this parable we see the boy is labeled with the title of “Son.” That one word indicates not only status, but, belonging. With it comes many privileges as well as security. Most importantly, all the host of Heaven knows who is assigned that name. It is why when asked, “How are you?” I reply, “Better than most.” With God, you are special. All blood washed people are considered the sons and daughters of God, hence their special place of belonging.

Equally beautiful is the concept of being equal. God does not use titles that allow us to exalt ourselves above other sons or daughters. God doesn’t play favorites. That is why I always follow up my “How are you?” response with, “Just as good as the rest!” In this parable He subtly reminds you that you can have a part in His family that will put you on equal status with all other believers. That means you are just as important as a preacher, Sunday school teacher, missionary, or any other position you might try to exalt above yourself. It can best be summarized as, “There is no big I and little you.” in His family.

Spring Break Is Over

I finally recooperated from spring break. That is the reason for the double post. My hope is to get caught back up seeing I am about 4 posts behind where I should be. I'd appreciate your prayers for God's inspiration.

Matthew 20:4

“And said unto them; Go ye into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right, I will give you. And they went their way.”

I’ll never forget the first time I worked with my grandpa. I was about 15 years old and minimum wage was $4.25 an hour at that time. He had a job pouring a large concrete slab in the customer’s backyard. My job was to push a wheelbarrow full of liquid concrete (mud) from the truck, through a gate, and into the backyard where I dumped it into the forms that had been set up. It was one of the most physically challenging jobs I had done in my life. It was also the most rewarding. I earned $50 for 2 hours of work.

Grandpa could have paid me minimum wage. He could have even got away with paying me $20, since I was still a kid. Instead, I was paid what was right. That is exactly what God has promised you. He is not bound by man made laws that determine minimum compensation. There is no need for the government or a union to “protect” you either. God is the benevolent employer who always compensates adequately. Can you think of a better boss to have?

Jeremiah 31:16

Thus saith the Lord; Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears: for thy work shall be rewarded, saith the Lord, and they shall come again from the land of the enemy.”

There is a running joke in my family about “experience.” My uncle Bill is a patriarch and ran a family landscaping business. Many of his brothers and nephews worked many sweaty hours in the hot Arizona sun so they might obtain financial reward. One particular summer my cousin, Doug, came over from California to work. One particular Friday everyone was paid except him. When he asked Uncle Bill about his pay, he was told that he got experience, thus no pay. Being the loving family that we are, he was lead to believe this to the point that he called his mom, overwhelmed with tears and anger. When the joke had played itself out, Doug was eventually given his due pay.

I am not saying God has a morbid sense of humor and will toy with your emotions, but He has promised to reward you for your work. The devil and many in the world would have you think that there is no reward for serving God; emphasizing everything you “have to give up.” He will even try to convince you that all you are getting is some type of dull “experience”, but God has said “thy work shall be rewarded.” The next time you feel like doing God’s work is a waste of time, think of the reward that He has promised and take courage. You will need patience because God did not promise when the reward would come, only that it would.

Titus 2:11

"For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,"

Have you ever had an unexpected guest over for Christmas? The only thing worse is if you are having a gift exchange. I have known people who can't handle the awkwardness so they will regift a present or find something around the house to wrap up. The only thing funnier are the looks on the faces of the guests who  pretend to enjoy a random gift from a complete stranger. God is promising that He will not offer you some random gift of lesser quality that reflects no personal knowledge of you as a person. Show up as an "unexpected guest" and He already has the perfect gift waiting for you.

Not everyone will have a pan that makes toast with the Virgin Mary's likeness. Not everone will have dirt spots depicting Jesus mysteriously appear on the wall in their home. Thank God these aren't requirements for salvation.  The reality is simple. God's grace will appear to every man, woman, and child. God is promising His grace is adequate to bring about any person's salvation. I know there is a common thought that only "elect" people will be offered this grace, but God is not Ed McMahon and His salvation is not a Publisher's Clearinghouse Sweepstake. He has invested too much to leave it to random chance and that is why His grace affords you the opportunity to choose. Are you willing to accept it? Of a truth it is the only "gift that keeps on giving."

Psalms 55:17

"Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice."

Just a minute. Not right now. Shhhhhhhh. I'm sorry, did you say something? We all have heard these and even used them ourselves. People are busy, preoccupied with what is important to them. God isn't! Here He is promising to always listen. This thought reminds me of a song titled when we pray.

"When we pray, the door to heaven will open. The Father is moved when prayers of faith are spoken.
All of heaven stands at attention, when the name of Jesus is mentioned.
He hears every word we say... when we pray"

Basically God is telling you, "If you'll care enough to share it with me, I'll care enough to drop whatever I am doing and give you my undivided attention." One of the greatest human needs is to be heard. That is exactly what God is promising you. How long has it been since He has heard from you; I mean really heard from you?

Have you ever wanted to call someone and talk, but then hesitated or even decided not to simply because it was not a "good time?"  As if this promise wasn't awesome enough, God even promised extended office hours! Anytime is a good time for God. Unlike 24-hr grocery stores or fast food chains, God doesn't offer stripped down, cost saving service for prayers offered at seemingly "inconvienient" moments. With Him, you always get His best.

Proverbs 19:21

“ There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand.”

As I have grown older I become more fond and nostalgic about childhood memories. Each time I go back to visit Arizona, I like to go back and visit my old elementary school. My favorite site to visit is the old Red School house. Originally it served as the only building. Prior to my arrival it served as a library until it was changed to the music room during the middle of my tenure as a student.

Each time I visit, I can’t help but remember the day the entire school stood in a line and passed books from the old library to the new one. That memory gives way to many more that took place in the shadow of that old red school-house. The comfort of each memory is solidified by the sight of that building, still standing tall despite decades of torment from the intense sun and seasonal monsoons. There is something comforting each time I see that building, probably because one thing hasn’t changed in this ever-changing world.

In a world where today’s technology and discoveries make yesterday’s knowledge obsolete, even inaccurate it is easy to lose faith in “truth.” While the truth of this world is ever changing, God’s truth isn’t. It has already been established and will never change; it shall stand. One of the many benefits is the comfort and security afforded the believer of God’s truth (counsel).

James 4:8

"Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded."

During my childhood I used to visit a makeshift dump about 1 mile behind our house. One of my favorite activities was to rummage through the dump looking for things to destroy with my hammer. I was, and unashamedly still am, fond of the sound of breaking glass. In the midst of all my destruction I discovered magnets, compliments of some broken speakers.

When I got back to the house I would spend hours playing with magnets and broken pieces of metal. The most vivid memory is how the little shreds of metal stood at attention and eagerly “scooted” towards the magnet when I brought it close. The slightest movement towards the scraps of metal would propel them into the magnetic force field where they inevitably became stuck on the magnet.

This is what God is promising you. If you will point your magnet in His direction, He will “scoot” Himself towards you so that you can be joined together. It is just like when two magnets are slowly moved towards each other. There is an initial action by your hands and then the gravitational force takes affect. God promises to provide a force if you will only make a move in His direction.

Pay special attention to the fact that God is not asking you to create the gravitational force. He has promised to take care of that. There doesn’t have to be good feelings for this to work. There are times when you are embarrassed or ashamed, thus you do not “feel” like God even wants to be around you. This promise hinges on obedience, not feelings. He simply said, If you will just look my way, I will come running yours.

Psalms 139:7-12

Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? [8] If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. [9] If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; [10] Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. [11] If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. [12] Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.”

I decided to bunch a few of these together to get at the larger principle. God is not the one you want to play hide and go seek with. While there are several details in here, the main thought is you can’t hide from Him. He is promising you that you will always be within His sight. Regardless of how good you think you might be you just can’t shake him.

Sometimes in life we allow ourselves to go to very dark places. Poor choices, carelessness, or just a bad sequence of events can cause a soul to “drift” away from God. Guilt usually spurns the soul to deeper pits of misery, endeavoring to “hide” their shame from God. The truth of His promise is there is nowhere to hide. He sees it all.

This promise should cheer the soul of every believer who battles affliction, temptation, or persecution! You are not alone. God is watching, waiting, before He acts. My children are at the age where they love to do things to impress me. They will run through the house yelling, “Dad. Dad, you gotta come see this.” Their smile of satisfaction is always a treat. Similarly, God has promised to watch you achieve in His Kingdom.

Tuesday, February 22, 2011

James 4:2

“Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.”

This promise is as simple as the old cliché. “A closed mouth don’t get fed.” There are times God will blow your mind and grant you things you never asked for and there are times when you are going to have to ask. When it comes time for asking, remember God doesn’t have to be as intimidating as your childhood friend’s dad. You know, the ones you never asked for anything, but rather, asked you friend to ask for you. God is much more approachable than that.

Sometimes it is difficult to ask, because we live life as if inspired by Home Depot. We go through life thinking we can do it, and another person will help if we struggle. In fact, the first portion of this promise makes reference to pursuing it in our own strength and according to our own understanding. The results are emptiness and complete lack.

The reality is, there will be things in life that only God will get you through. You will be forced to swallow your pride and ask. If you don’t, then you won’t have.

Have you ever been a guest and someone offer you the last of the desert but you refused? For some reason we think this makes us a good guest and that our host is pleased with out choice. I can recall several times I suffered because I didn’t want to take it all. I am happy to report that I have overcome that shortcoming, when it comes to God. God like a gracious host offers what we want, but often we refuse in an attempt to show what a good guest we are. All the while, we suffer because we really want it. Do you want it bad enough to ask God for it?

Isaiah 40:29

He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.”

God has promised to be your spinach! As a child I watched too many Popeye cartoons where he would be beat down by Brutus, or the Seahag’s goons. Whenever Popeye tried in his own strength, he had limited success and neared complete defeat, until he ate a can of spinach. The theme music would start, Popeye instantly had bulging muscles, and he quickly dispatched the bad guys with kicks and punches.

Possibly you have visions of Hulk Hogan laying on the wrestling mat, seemingly having had all his life choked out by his opponent. The referee would raise his hand only to watch it collapse to the canvas. Once. Twice. Raised a third time, the hand began to fall indicating defeat. No. Wait! Wait! His hand is shaking, twisting, throbbing as if infused with unheard of power. Immediately, Hulk Hogan gets out of trouble and disposes of his opponent to retain his title as champion.

Both childhood memories serve as a silly, but true, picture of what God promises His children. Are you faint? Beat down? Do you face situations or circumstances that appear hopeless? God has something for you. It isn’t literal spinach and you won’t get to beat people up, but He has a power that will allow you to do His will. Anytime you lack power, energy, or mental and emotional fortitude to do the right thing remember God has promised the power.

I also want to caution you about accomplishing His will. Power is the ability to do work. The key word is ability. You are going to have to exercise faith and do something with the power God gives if you expect to see any results.

Romans 2:11

“For there is no respect of persons with God.”

As a kid I grew up watching too much tv. One particular commercial I remember was about a guy named Bob. Everywhere he went Bob was special because of his car.

( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgKtihDtooQ ) Signs read, “No Parking, Except for Bob.” The whole idea was that you could be someone special because of what you drove. People would have “respect” for you and of you.

Growing up in the 80’s, I was accustomed to the idea of social groups. There were countless movies like “Revenge of the Nerds”, “Can’t Buy Me Love”, “Bad News Bears”, “Rocky”, and “Trading Places” that explored the problems associated with social grouping and class warfare. The reality was there was a real problem and even worldly people could recognize it. Unfortunately, all the efforts of Hollywood has done nothing to fix the problem.

This is what makes this promise so special. For once in your life, you can be recognized for simply being equal. God doesn’t think more of a pastor than He does a Sunday school bus driver. What God uses your life to do doesn’t make you more special. By the same token, you are not inferior to other children of God whom He is blessing. God is promising that there are no second-class citizens in His kingdom. That is what makes being a part of His family so wonderful!

Luke 11:13

If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?”

Believe it or not, there is a tremendous amount packed in this one. I want to first let you know that God doesn’t just give His spirit to any person. God is Holy and will not dwell in unholy habitations. So it is important we understand His spirit is precious and brings tremendous power, hence God doesn’t toss it around like a useless penny that anyone can possess.

Much of what is packed in here deals with how we work with God to be prepared to receive the gift of His spirit. Part of this promise indicates that God is willing to enter into that work with you. If you’ll be truthful, you would admit that you are not altogether how God prepares a human vessel for His spirit. That is why He has promised to work with you. He desires to bring you to that place.

As a math teacher I regularly run into students who are in so far over their heads that they don’t even know what would be a good question to ask. When God promises to give His spirit, He is implying that we will not only be prepared but that we will also know how to ask. The above promise alluded that natural fathers know what their children need and thus give them what is best. Imagine God, possessor of all knowledge. Will you trust Him to lead you? Will you allow Him to bring you to the place where He can give you His very spirit to reside within you? “How much more your heavenly father” is the promise He has made to you.

Psalms 1:3

"And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper."

This time we want to look at the idea of bringing forth fruit. God has promised that you will not only be taken care of, but He also has promised to make you of benefit to those around you. Let us ever be reminded by God that our life is not lived unto ourselves. The whole goal of our time on earth is to learn of God so we might be more like Him, thereby blessing those who cross our path.

There are two keys to a happy Christian experience when considering fruit bearing. First, there is a definite season. That season is determined by God not you, nor another person. If you will do as God counsels, you will not have to scheme as to how to make fruit come forth of your life. God has promised to make it happen as a natural result of His established laws.

Secondly, you have to remember people eat fruit. It isn’t just something people look at and say “How pretty.” That is part of His promise. You can spiritually feed, or be of benefit, when others eat of what is coming forth out of your life. It won’t bring about their salvation, but it will give them a taste of what salvation can do for them. Isn’t it a joy to know, despite what you may think about yourself, that God has promised to use you to benefit others?

Psalms 1:3

"And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper."

This conditional promise reminds me of summer drives up I-17 from Phoenix to Flagstaff. Much of Arizona is a desert, especially along the freeway just north of Phoenix. There is a definite shortage of water when compared to states like Oregon and Washington, so much of the vegetation is shrubs, puny trees, or various cacti.

The contrast of various shades of brown is broken by the lush, green vegetation, that, clearly marks the river’s path. In the midst of the greenery 30’-50’ Cottonwood trees flourish. Even in the deserts of Arizona in the dead heat of summer! The reason is simple. They draw their life from the vast water supplied by the river and those jealous shrubs, too far from the river’s waters, shrivel under the searing heat from the sun.

Much of this world and the people in it are just like the deserts of Arizona. They have an existence, yet not
abundant life. God is promising you that you can flourish in this lifetime, even when others in the near distance shrivel, struggle, or die. Unlike the trees, you have a choice where you will be “planted.” Should you decide to follow God and His counsels then you will be a distinct marker of His river of life. That means God will use you to show others what He can do to an ordinary life. It also means that He will adequately supply what you need.

Mark 13:23

“But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things.”

This promise reminds me of a couple of common clichés. “Hindsight is

20-20” and “if I had only known.” The truth is knowledge can save us a lot of trouble. Knowledge can also bring us great benefit, especially when you know before something is going to happen. When things happen according to what you expected, your emotions are more at ease and you don’t experience overwhelming sensations.

This is what He is promising. God isn’t surprised ever! He knows all things and that is what He has promised to tell you, in advance. I know you might say, “I didn’t expect this.” or “I was surprised by that.” The question remains, “Did you seek God’s counsel prior to the event?” This is why it is so important for people to read and study the Word of God. It is in His word that He reveals the knowledge.

A few years back there were some funny commercials about being a Monday morning quarterback. The idea was anybody on Monday would have known what not to do on Sunday’s game. The comedy was that everybody thought they knew what was right, after the fact. God is not a Monday morning quarterback. He knows in advance and if you will listen, He’ll tell you. In the midst of your life’s events, God is promising to give you a knowledge that yields peace that surpasses human understanding. Will you take heed?

Psalms 50:15

"And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me."

In the previous promise we learned that God has no limits. It isn't enough to know that God is capable, which is why He propmised to be willing. We are surrounded with people who have tremendous means who turn an indifferent shoulder to the destitute. Regardless of the wealth around them, they are not benefited because indifference yields no action.

It reminds me of the time I had a face to face conversation with an NBA player. I expressed to him a social injustice that was affecting helpless and destitute children in the city where he played. This man had political and financial power to positively change the situation, yet he could only say, "That is too bad." Despite having the means, there was no will to prompt action.

I, like God, have put these two promises near each other to complete the thought. God promised to be willing as well as able. The cliche is ready, willing, and able. God is not limited with time, so it isn't a matter of readiness on His part. That belongs to you. Are you ready? Are you submitted to His will? Are you humbled enough to ask for His help, or are you still busy trying to do it yourself wondering why God hasn't done something yet?

Psalms 50:12

“If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.”

The fullness of a few of God’s promises are not truly understood until we are able to really grasp this simple yet profound concept. God has no limits!!! When He says “the world is mine” it isn’t wishful thinking. He really has control of anything you can possibly think of. It is all His.

I’ll put it in terms you can understand. As a 5-year old child I was stabbed in the eye with a piece of broken pvc pipe. After a few minutes of centipede my dad was unable to get my eyeball back in the socket. At the hospital emergency room we had to wait because my injury was not life threatening. 20 minutes into the wait game, my brother, cousin and I grew bored, so they pushed my wheelchair all over the place. We eventually found a pop machine and tried our luck.

As if the day wasn’t bad enough, the machine ate our money yet yielded no pop. In frustration my brother kicked the machine and slapped a button. When a pop came out, he slapped the button again. Presto! Out came one pop after another every time we pressed a button. It was as if my brother had turned into the Fonz. Needless to say, we couldn’t begin to drink all the pop in the machine but we had fun trying.

The point is this. When we wanted a pop it was available. All we had to do was push the button. Unlike a pop machine, God doesn’t have limited storage capacity. However, like the machine, anything God wants is at his disposal. God is the Fonz of the universe!

I Corinthians 1:5

"That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge;"

This promise is a direct result of the grace of God manifested to us through Jesus Christ. It covers all aspects of your life. The next time you start feeling down about yourself, stop and think about this. God has made and continues to make you a better person. To enrich is to make better or stronger and that is exactly what He has promised to do for you.
I specifically want to emphasize the fact that we are enriched in what we say. Have you ever had the urge to say something for the Lord only to remain silent? This usually happens because you are tempted to think, "I'm not going to say it right. No one really cares what I have to say." and many other such phrases. Perhaps you are like me, in that you make a "joyful noise" instead of singing. Did you know God has promised to enrich all that you say or do.
As I said before I am not a singer. I can't read music and I don't know the difference between tune, key, and melody. What's worse, is I don't like to do things half-hearted or quietly. At work I often walk the halls singing gospel songs. I honestly don't care what others think because I sing to God, so all the comments I get pleading with me to stop don't phase me.
One particular day my singing was interrupted by a fellow teacher. She said, "That is beautiful. Do you sing in the choir at church?" I couldn't help but laugh out loud. I know there at least two people in the world that sing worse (love ya Mom & Aunt Deb), but a choir voice? As I walked down the hall I began to realize what this promise had just done. God enriched my singing and made it glorious to another person!
God is promising you similar blessings. It may be the way in which it is communicated or it may be the meaning. God is not limited by your weakness. In fact, He is promising to enrich them. Do you have faith to accept His enrichment?

Too Busy

I am not going to make excuses and blame my internet being down (which it was for 5 days). I simply have been too busy and thus tired. When that happens and I don't have a few saved up, I get behind. I know you'll forgive me, not because you have to in order to make heaven, but because you are genuinely nice. I trust you enjoy today's thought.

BTW. Welcome to Heather! I trust the Lord will bless you as you read this blog.
